Harmony Guitar Show

Sometime in the future I would like to organize a guitar show exclusively for Harmony guitars and other Harmony instruments.
This would include most of the Silvertone and other "Private Label" made Harmony instruments.

I think the ideal location would be somewhere in the middle of the USA, perhaps Kansas City or Omaha. Of course, Chicago would be the premier spot, bit I live so far from there it would be hard to put something together there. Perhaps for show #2 or #3, depending on the response and turnout.

I have run conventions before, and they can be costly. The first show might be done on the cheap with a location for showing and a swap meet without meals or accomodations.

Let me know what you think about this idea and any suggestions about putting it all together.
Post comments below.

Thanks,

Jim

I just requested a search for harmony guitars and found your site. I am delighted. About six years ago I purchased a Harmony guitar from Central Market here in Adelaide South Australia. I would like to know more about it but haven't found anything specific on your site. It has a number stamped inside it and has been painted with a Hawaiin Design: black green and silver. Any ideas?

Anyway I was wondering if the convention you mention could be done online? Each Harmony owner to post a photo of their guitars and what they know about the items...?

I have a F61 Harmony Rocket. I think that means it was built in the Fall of 1961. I received it as a gift from my uncle, but I don't much more about it. I would like to get an other pick gaurd for it. Can you help? The guitar is black with a yellow sunburst, It has 2 F holes and two gold and silver pick ups. 2 volume and 3 tone knobs. It also has a white edging, plain white machine heads, and a floating tailpiece. There is a number stamped on the back, 3293H54.

Man im 24 years old, an was lucky enough to find a Harmony stratotone H-49. in mint shape from a friend who found it at a garge sale. aperntly it had been sittin in it's case for all these years, in the guys garage when his son left it there. I paid my friend 100 bucks Can for it. I own a gibson S.G and i have worked in a guitar store an played many guitars. But i found that i prefer my stratotone to anything that I have ever played. It simply sounds and feels better then anything i own. I absolutly love my stratotone. An i would have no idea what i would do if i ever lost it. it's simply irreplaceable. I have had bands an recording guys wanna rent it off me, guitar stores try to buy it. So I certainly understand your guys obsession. I think if i could replicate the sound of my guitar it would cost thousands. It's simply unique. every one has a gibson or a fender. or a fender wanna be. Only the few of us lucky ones have a great harmony.

In 1954 (1954) I graduated from the eight grade and was getting ready to go to high school (in those days a poor little farm boy would be lucky to get to go)...I had hurt my back and was laid up for the summer. I wanted a guitar but my dad said I'd have learn to play the fiddle first. That fall I managed to save up enough money from pickup up walnuts, shelling them to pay for a guitar. I ordered it from the Spiegel catalog. I thinkk is cost me around twelve dollars. It's a Harmony "Master"...doesn't have any information on the inside that I can see. the head has about a 2 inch sixteenth not in gold and "made in the USA"...doesn't have a steel rod in the neck and warped a little over the years. It's an "f" hole with an arched top and back. Mahogany faded finish.

I learned to play on it...my sister's son(s) learned to play on it...they're now in their forty's. Several years ago my sister wanted to know if I'd like it back?

Got on this site while on a phishing expedition. My son who is an avid quitartist likes to keep it as an art piece.

Hey-

Can anyone make a recommendation here? If you go to this site:http://www.tradingmusician.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=catalog&parent_id=306

you'll see series of Harmony's & Kay's. I know no one knows the condition of any of these- but, assuming there in playable shape, does any of them seem a best buy? I'm a novice swing guitarist, playing mostly rhythm, and hoping to work up to chord melody.

Any help MUCH appreciated. I can be pm'ed at:

I bought a Harmony Rocket (it looks like an H54 with two pickups and two cutouts) about 35 years ago, played a few times and it's been in a closet at whatever home I've lived in ever since. While doing a clean-up this year I found it in the back of my guitar closet. Two questions;
1) the serial number ends in B54. Normally, the letter and digits signify the model number. Does anyone know what the B stands for?

2) I am having a grounding problem with the front pickup causing it not to work. When I place one finger on the tone harness and one on the pickup it start working. Does anyone know how to correct this problem? My local guitar guy could not figure out what to do.
The back pickup works perfictly and the guitar sounds great!

Thanks
Rob

DeKalb, Illinois is neither too far from Chicago, nor too close. There are a number of venues. South Pointe center, Various hotel banquet rooms and of course Northern Illinois University. There might be enough in town accomodations for a first year event. Rochelle and Sycamore are just a short drive away and Aurora a comfortable 20 min.

"BREAKING NEWS"
===============

-Energy and Asset Technology, Inc. (EGTY) owns a global license to market
the genetically enhanced Global Cedar growth trees, with plans to
REVOLUTIONIZE the forest-timber industry.

These newly enhanced Global Cedar trees require only 9-12 years of growth before they can
be harvested for lumber, whereas worldwide growth time for lumber is 30-50 years.

Other than growing at an astonishing rate, the Global Cedar has a number of other benefits.
Its natural elements make it resistant to termites, and the lack of oils and sap found in the wood
make it resistant to forest fire, ensuring higher returns on investments.

the wood is very lightweight and strong, lighter than Poplar and over twice
as strong as Balsa, which makes it great for construction. It also has
the unique ability to regrow itself from the stump, minimizing the land and
time to replant and develop new root systems.

Based on current resources and agreements, EGTY projects revenues of $140 Million
with an approximate profit margin of 40% for each 9-year cycle. With anticipated
growth, EGTY is expected to challenge Deltic Timber Corp. during its initial 9-year cycle.

Deltic Timber Corp. currently trades at over $38.00 a share with about $153 Million in revenues.
As the reputation and demand for the Global Cedar tree continues to grow around the world
EGTY believes additional multi-million dollar agreements will be forthcoming. The Global Cedar nursery has produced
about 100,000 infant plants and is developing a production growth target of 250,000 infant plants per month.

Energy and Asset Technology is currently in negotiations with land and business owners in New Zealand,
Greece and Malaysia regarding the purchase of their popular and profitable fast growing infant tree plants.
Inquiries from the governments of Brazil and Ecuador are also being evaluated.

Hi
I just recently purchased a Harmony small bodied acoustic with the name "MORE HARMONY" on the headstock. I am wondering what the story is on this guitar. It seemed kind of strange to me and especially the way that the stenceled lettering is similar to like a polynesian type set. There is also a wierd stenceled art work around the soundhole that is similar in size to a dinner plate and has the shape of a rounded "G" with the inside being stenceled through a mesh screen. I know it sounds wierd but I felt very lucky to have found it in all original condition with what I believe to be the original case. Thanks

PS: Will be glad to forward pics if you tell me where to send

Hi. I have a Monterey f-holed guitar that I bought from a pawn shop in Alburqueque NM in 1978 for $6. It followed me around the world (without a case) in the back of an Royal Air Force Nimrod, and has two cracks at the bottom of the lower f-hole (my 18 month old son stood on it in 1983 and added a second crack to the one it came with!). It doesn't have the word "Harmony" on the guitar anywhere (just Monterey), and I know nothing about these guitars other than it sounds great and my 10 year old daughter now plays it in church. Do you have any thoughts as to its age? It looks exactly like the Monterey Leader on you web page.

I have a fantastic guitar. It is a solid body, gloss black, has two pick ups, and appears to never have been designed with a pick guard. It says: made in indonesia on the sticker on the back, the body shape is slightly Les Paulish, but the the single cutaway has a rounded protrusion rather than a pointed one.

Although there are two pick ups ,it only has one volume knob, and one tone knob. There is a toggle switch above the neck.

what model is this? I don't know what the pick ups are called, but they are like DOUBLE pickup (two bars with the metal dots on them)

this axe sounds GREAT, and plays better. I own a bunch of collectible gibsons, and such, so I am amazed by this guitar. Any help out there? Please email me at:

I baught an f hole Archtone Harmony (3975 H 1215 F61)at a Pawn Shop in Denver Co in 1963. about 1975 one of my Kids knocked it off a stage and broke the neck out of it. Sheared the dove tail on the neck. It has been gathering dust ever since.

A little while back I got it out and rebuilt the dove tail out of JB Weld anchoring it with some small brass screws. and stuck it back together with some more JB Weld. Looks allmost like new. The string height from the finger board is bettter than it was when i got it. Plays good too!!!.

Unlike most I have seen on the internet and heard guys talk about. There in no cracks in either the bottom or the top.

I didn't have much confidence in my ability To rebuild it.just thought I woulld use it as a wall Decoration, but am playing it every day, using it as a practice Guitar

I had an Harmony semi- hollow that looked a bit like a Gibson LP back in the early 70's late 60's, and I use to play it thru both a Ampeg B12? flip top as well as a Vox Guardsman with 2- 10"? No guitar I owned at the time sounded anything like that Harmony. Sustain the likes of which I have not heard since! The pick-ups were odd though. You could actually talk through them as if they were microphones. Amazing!

Some days are just strange. My foster daughter has a cheerleading game to go to. My wife is the co-coach of the cheerleaders. The team they cheer for are the Saints.

Today was a special day as we had grandmothers coming to the game. So my wife drags me out of bed. Since I don't have a Saint shirt, she had me wear a t-shirt my mother gave me for my birthday several years ago. The shirt says 'Play Guitar' on the front and on the back about 30 guitars and the logo, you can never have too many guitars.

To help my wife out, she sends me to the store to pick up a Starbucks. So I get into my trusty Jeep to make the trek to Starbucks. Along the way, I see a family setting up garage sale.

Lo and behold I see they set out guitar. They explain they weren't ready but they would sell me the guitar for $3.00. I ended up giving them $5.00 since they did not have any change.

The guitar - a Harmony Patrician. Several scratches are on the guitar and the strings are obviously 30+ years or more. Inside the case is an old Gibson logo. There is what looks like a serial number on the tailpiece of the guitar:

279-05-1123

This is stenciled in the tailstop in cursive written in the metal.

For the most part, the instrument is in good condition.

I'm amazed how silly and wonderful life can be sometimes!

Have a Harmony Hollywood with a great print of "Oscar" on the headstock. Great old knobs and beautiful wood. Neatest thing are the spray-painted fret markers (they over-run their stencils a bit).Original case too! Pickguard broken and incomplete though. 45 bucks.

Five years ago I bought an old acoustic guitar in a battered case for $10.00 at the markets in Canberra. Took it "bush" where I lived and worked and it sat there for 3 years - carted it with me evrywhere. Took it to Dubbo on a business trip and dropped it off at a guitar shop to get it fixed. The lutharian wasn't there but phoned me 2 hours later when he got back to his store and told me to come pick it up because he would not touch it - never said why! Last year I took it to a mate's guitar master craftsman and he advised me not to have it touched. Anyway the bottom line is I got him to do some minor work to have it more playable - nut, bridge and pegs. He kept faith with wood and ivory from that era. When I picked it up he showed me a stamped reference inside "1938F". He said as far as his research and his professional experience told him it was a 1938 Harmony Acoustic Guitar. He said one of the machine heads could have done with a bit of work to hold the tune but he wanted to keep faith with the original condition of the old girl. Just needs a bit of winding up every time she's picked up and played. How silly am I if his assessment is accurate?

Hey Guys!! Great to see there's a site for Harmony owners. I took guitar lessons back in the late 70's woth a Harmony my parents bought for me. I tried to look up the model ( H6341) but was unsuccessful. Any help? Good news is my daughter has expressed interest in guitar lessons and that will be the guitar she is going to use. Very Cool!! Would appreciate any help. Thanks

Your idea about a convention is a good one. In terms of cost, maybe an instrument could be raffled off as part of the fund raising element to finance the show. But then the instrument would need to be donated. I'd pay $20 to have the chance to win a cool vintage guitar.

Question: Does anyone know about a Barclay USA guitar? They went out of business in the `60s, I think, but I heard a rumor that they were once associated with Harmony. I've scoured the internet and can find nothing about this guitar or the company.

I have a Marquis by Harmony Model HM300 and the tag says made in Korea. Can anyone give me some idea what quality this is. I have had this sitting around for about 20 years and really don't know anything about it except I like to play it. Please forward anything you may know about this fine sounding guitar.

There's a lot of stuff here asking how to date a Harmony.
My rocket has S60 and 3245H54 stamped inside. S60 means she was built in Spring 1960, H54 is the model number for a 2 pickup Rocket, and 3245 is the serial number which does not mean a lot as they reused the numbers
Hope this helps.
