Harmony Guitar Show

Sometime in the future I would like to organize a guitar show exclusively for Harmony guitars and other Harmony instruments.
This would include most of the Silvertone and other "Private Label" made Harmony instruments.

I think the ideal location would be somewhere in the middle of the USA, perhaps Kansas City or Omaha. Of course, Chicago would be the premier spot, bit I live so far from there it would be hard to put something together there. Perhaps for show #2 or #3, depending on the response and turnout.

I have run conventions before, and they can be costly. The first show might be done on the cheap with a location for showing and a swap meet without meals or accomodations.

Let me know what you think about this idea and any suggestions about putting it all together.
Post comments below.

Thanks,

Jim

I just requested a search for harmony guitars and found your site. I am delighted. About six years ago I purchased a Harmony guitar from Central Market here in Adelaide South Australia. I would like to know more about it but haven't found anything specific on your site. It has a number stamped inside it and has been painted with a Hawaiin Design: black green and silver. Any ideas?

Anyway I was wondering if the convention you mention could be done online? Each Harmony owner to post a photo of their guitars and what they know about the items...?

I have a F61 Harmony Rocket. I think that means it was built in the Fall of 1961. I received it as a gift from my uncle, but I don't much more about it. I would like to get an other pick gaurd for it. Can you help? The guitar is black with a yellow sunburst, It has 2 F holes and two gold and silver pick ups. 2 volume and 3 tone knobs. It also has a white edging, plain white machine heads, and a floating tailpiece. There is a number stamped on the back, 3293H54.

Hi! I got a 1990's Harmony Stratocaster copy last year from a friend as a birthday present but I play a little more on the metal side of music so I bought a B.C. Rich Warlock. I'm trying to sell it but I can't find out what it's worth. I'm wondering if you could help me figure out the price. Any help is appreciated.

Hey-

Can anyone make a recommendation here? If you go to this site:http://www.tradingmusician.com/catalog/index.cfm?fuseaction=catalog&parent_id=306

you'll see series of Harmony's & Kay's. I know no one knows the condition of any of these- but, assuming there in playable shape, does any of them seem a best buy? I'm a novice swing guitarist, playing mostly rhythm, and hoping to work up to chord melody.

Any help MUCH appreciated. I can be pm'ed at:

DeKalb, Illinois is neither too far from Chicago, nor too close. There are a number of venues. South Pointe center, Various hotel banquet rooms and of course Northern Illinois University. There might be enough in town accomodations for a first year event. Rochelle and Sycamore are just a short drive away and Aurora a comfortable 20 min.

Hi
I just recently purchased a Harmony small bodied acoustic with the name "MORE HARMONY" on the headstock. I am wondering what the story is on this guitar. It seemed kind of strange to me and especially the way that the stenceled lettering is similar to like a polynesian type set. There is also a wierd stenceled art work around the soundhole that is similar in size to a dinner plate and has the shape of a rounded "G" with the inside being stenceled through a mesh screen. I know it sounds wierd but I felt very lucky to have found it in all original condition with what I believe to be the original case. Thanks

PS: Will be glad to forward pics if you tell me where to send

Hi. I have a Monterey f-holed guitar that I bought from a pawn shop in Alburqueque NM in 1978 for $6. It followed me around the world (without a case) in the back of an Royal Air Force Nimrod, and has two cracks at the bottom of the lower f-hole (my 18 month old son stood on it in 1983 and added a second crack to the one it came with!). It doesn't have the word "Harmony" on the guitar anywhere (just Monterey), and I know nothing about these guitars other than it sounds great and my 10 year old daughter now plays it in church. Do you have any thoughts as to its age? It looks exactly like the Monterey Leader on you web page.

I baught an f hole Archtone Harmony (3975 H 1215 F61)at a Pawn Shop in Denver Co in 1963. about 1975 one of my Kids knocked it off a stage and broke the neck out of it. Sheared the dove tail on the neck. It has been gathering dust ever since.

A little while back I got it out and rebuilt the dove tail out of JB Weld anchoring it with some small brass screws. and stuck it back together with some more JB Weld. Looks allmost like new. The string height from the finger board is bettter than it was when i got it. Plays good too!!!.

Unlike most I have seen on the internet and heard guys talk about. There in no cracks in either the bottom or the top.

I didn't have much confidence in my ability To rebuild it.just thought I woulld use it as a wall Decoration, but am playing it every day, using it as a practice Guitar

I had an Harmony semi- hollow that looked a bit like a Gibson LP back in the early 70's late 60's, and I use to play it thru both a Ampeg B12? flip top as well as a Vox Guardsman with 2- 10"? No guitar I owned at the time sounded anything like that Harmony. Sustain the likes of which I have not heard since! The pick-ups were odd though. You could actually talk through them as if they were microphones. Amazing!

Five years ago I bought an old acoustic guitar in a battered case for $10.00 at the markets in Canberra. Took it "bush" where I lived and worked and it sat there for 3 years - carted it with me evrywhere. Took it to Dubbo on a business trip and dropped it off at a guitar shop to get it fixed. The lutharian wasn't there but phoned me 2 hours later when he got back to his store and told me to come pick it up because he would not touch it - never said why! Last year I took it to a mate's guitar master craftsman and he advised me not to have it touched. Anyway the bottom line is I got him to do some minor work to have it more playable - nut, bridge and pegs. He kept faith with wood and ivory from that era. When I picked it up he showed me a stamped reference inside "1938F". He said as far as his research and his professional experience told him it was a 1938 Harmony Acoustic Guitar. He said one of the machine heads could have done with a bit of work to hold the tune but he wanted to keep faith with the original condition of the old girl. Just needs a bit of winding up every time she's picked up and played. How silly am I if his assessment is accurate?

Your idea about a convention is a good one. In terms of cost, maybe an instrument could be raffled off as part of the fund raising element to finance the show. But then the instrument would need to be donated. I'd pay $20 to have the chance to win a cool vintage guitar.

Question: Does anyone know about a Barclay USA guitar? They went out of business in the `60s, I think, but I heard a rumor that they were once associated with Harmony. I've scoured the internet and can find nothing about this guitar or the company.

There's a lot of stuff here asking how to date a Harmony.
My rocket has S60 and 3245H54 stamped inside. S60 means she was built in Spring 1960, H54 is the model number for a 2 pickup Rocket, and 3245 is the serial number which does not mean a lot as they reused the numbers
Hope this helps.

I have what I think is a harmony Knockoff guitar.
Instead of saying Harmony at the top,
it has a (paper?) tag that says in a fancy lettering (Nobility?) (its hard to make out) it also has "P'MICO" and New York on the tag.
It is an Archtop / Archback with "antique" sunburst pattern.

here is a URL to and image of what the guitar looks like (looks exactly the same with exeption of the harmony name).

Anyone who knows what this guitar is, (ideally an approximate price range now a days for it) and any good care instructions I would be much appreciative.

Thanks alot!

I found your site today. I recently aquired two Harmony guitars. One, a 1959 Hollywood (great condition) was purchased by a co-worker at a yard sale who passed it on to me. The Hollywood has the original finish with the black streak up the middle and the Oscar statue on the headstock. The single pick-up works and sounds like it is brand new. I love the tone through my vintage Silvertone head and amplification...it really sounds rich and full.

Then, this past weekend, I was in a music store in Kentucky where there was an old guitar hanging in the window. After a little bartering, I wound up picking up my 2nd Harmony. This is an H1060 model with a production date of S43...which I am assuming to be spring of 1943. It is a very pretty dark sunburst finish and other than a couple of small cracks on the top F hole, it is in great shape.

I love these guitars and feel like I'm well on my way to being a collector. It doesn't matter what any "experts" say about these being cheap, they were quality instruments 60 years ago, and the proof that they are still quality is evident when you pick one up and play it today. I wouldn't trade either one of these guitars and they look excellent hanging on my wall too.

Thanks again for helping us out and pointing us in the right direction

Now I've been looking at a lot of these blogs posted and it seems that theres not many Harmony Basses around and also I've noticed all guitars and basses are from the 60's and 70's.

Can someone please let know what this thing is worth or when it was made or just ANYTHING at all. Contact me at Kryptonite@email.com

Thanks

Hi Jim- great website, and I dig your idea of a Harmony guitar event, I live in Tucson so I'm a ways from the midwest but I'll watch your site for progress.
I have several Harmony models I've collected since the 60's, one of the more interesting is a Harmony Buck Owens American red white and blue model that is autographed and previously owed by Buck, he told me it had been given to him by the Harmony company as the 'sign off' prototype before the model went into mass production. It has some one of a kind markings that lends authification to his story... I am interested in selling it and wondered if you had any input- I can send photos if you'd like- keep up the good work,

Hey music lovers do you believe in love at first site? Several years ago I saw a couple of kids walking away from an auction in LA with a black acoustic guitar had some f hole cut outs and tiger stipe, and a nice shiny resignator, it was indeed love at first site. " Howdy boys" how much you have to give up for that guitar? I'll givr you double that right now. That old guitar turned out to be a 1936 D harmony, with the purtyest sound you ever did hear, oh yeah! we are still together till death do us part. Nice hollerin at yeh

I gigged with a Harmony 3 pickup semi (Red sunburst) which I bought in Russell St Melbourne in 1967. I have a picture of me playing it at Canterbury Town Hall dance with my band the Incas (Can't remember the name of the venue). It was 1967/68 the same night that Russell Morris gigged there with Somebodies Image before he became famous.
I recall I didn't really like the small scale of the Harmony although the tone was great, especially for rock chords.
I was envious of the sound from the Somebodies Image guitarist, who played a Telecaster through a Twin. I bought an old Strat after that. Now I have a Tele and a Twin 1960,s reissue.

WOW! Thanks Jim, for all this incredible information. I live in sunny San Diego, CA, and I've been referring to this site since I discovered the internet and it has provided me with the answers for some of my favorite guitars. I picked up an H-162 in about '87, an H-72 shortly after, and now I have 9 Harmony made beauties! I think a Harmony Guitar Show would be a great idea and if it ever catches on to the west coast, I'll bring all my Harmony's to show off! I've played a few of my Harmony's professionally and they ALWAYS get noticed. I've done some recording with my old H-162 and it sounds more "woody" and "organic" than my $4,000 Taylor! So SWEET!! Thanks SO MUCH Jim, keep it up!!

One factor that has tremendously hiked up the number of researches going into the male sexual dysfunction disease, erectile dysfunction, is definitely the ED drugs like cialis.Definitely every man dreads the prospect of falling back on medicines, no matter how much good they have done or how effective they are. One way of possibly staying away from ED is to have sex atleast thrice a week. This exercise can be phenomenal in cutting down the risks of ED to half.

Hi from Denver
I have a Harmony Monterey Leader Tenor (H950). It's old and in very good shape. Here's my problem: I have not found a date stamp. The H950 is an archtop with F holes. I haven't taken the pickguard off --could the date be visable through the treble side F hole, or under the pickguard? Anyone out there with old catalogs to help date this instrument? Would appreaciate ANY help.
Thanks,
Fletch

Howdy great website! Does running a blog similar to this take a great deal of work?
I have virtually no expertise in computer programming but
I had been hoping to start my own blog in the near future.
Anyhow, if you have any ideas or techniques for new blog owners please
share. I understand this is off topic however I simply had to ask.
Cheers!
