Professional Players

It has come to my attention that there are quite a number of pro players out there that use Harmony guitars. This is great to hear!
The more that Harmony instruments get noticed on stage the more collectable they become and the higher the values go. (Bad news for those wanting to buy cheap)

Now to all you hobby players, don't feel slighted, you are very much appreciated, as the entire Harmony company was built around the hobbiest.

The information I am looking for on this post is concerning pro players who use Harmony guitars as their main instrument.

Tell us about you, your career and your instrument!

I guess I will start this one out.
I play quite a few Harmony instruments on stage.
Let's see.....
A 1965 Rocket, 1965 Silhouette, 1963 H75, 1959 Meteor, late '60's Rebel, 1950 Consolectric Steel Guitar,1965 Stratotone, 1971 Folk Acoustic, 1970 H22 Bass, 1962 Broadway, 1936 Resonator, 1964 Patrician, and 1955 Monterey. Yes, I am a guitar pig.
But, I do use them all onstage and in recording sessions.
I perform all accross the USA and some in Canada.
Recently I had an all Harmony guitar song included on a BBC TV series sound track!

I love my old cheap guitars. I wouldn't trade them for any old Gibson, Fender or other such guitar.

I am happy to have this site available to everyone. I only wish I could find the time to finish it as it is only half done.
Maybe this winter I will be able to get at it!

On stage, I regularly use my 65 Rocket (the H59 3 pickup guy...modified with a Bigsby)...and my 1966 H-72 (also with a Bigsby, but the factory one)...I use them as often as my 69 Tele...have a short tour in the pacific northwest and am only bringing two guitars...one of them will surely be one of the Harmonys...which one, though? Tough choice, but I think I'll take the Rocket...Amazing neck on that guitar...killer sound. PLay them through a Magnatone and a Sano Twin...amazing tone.

I've also had an H-15 and an H-19 over the years...and still have a Rebel (doesn't get played a lot, though, as it's not as good as the other two). Probably selling the Rebel.

On the wish list: The H-76 (of course)...and a Hollywood. The 2 pickup model.

Fun site---thanks--all best-

Hi there. Helder From Portugal

I own a Pearl Export Guitar mad in Japan that i was told was made by Harmony and sold under the "Pearl" brand. It's a les paul type with a mohogany body, cherry sunburst, set-neck, cream neck binding and pearl block inlays, 2 humbuckers (cream), 2 vol, 1 tone, 2 mini switches, string trough body brass bridge.

I bought it used and the headsock had been broken and reglued so the original neck painting is gone as well as the original tuners... I didn't knew this was a rare guitar, so i gave the neck a clear laquer finish and added a cream binding to the headstock. The guitar looks fine now, plays and sounds amazing.

Do you know when this guitar was made? I read that harmony guitars only carried the Pearl Brand for a Year in the seventies. Do you have some pictures of such guitars?

Thanks

I have a ´69 Rocket that I sometimes use on stage when I gig with my blues band. I became aware of the Harmony when I saw early photos of The Kinks and The Stones, and I thought their sound was great. So I got me this guitar from Ebay. Great seller, he had problems shipping to Norway because of the size of the box - it would cost almost as much as the guitar... So I asked him to take off the neck, and he did, no harm done to it. The neck is as straight as a ruler and the frets are perfect. It sounds a bit "cheap" when not plugged in, and I like that a guitar sounds good unplugged, even if it´s an electric. But there is nothing that sounds like this Rocket through my 1966 Dynacord tube-amp head with 2x12" Hagstrom cabinet and a home-made 1x15" cabinet. Awesome is the only word I can come up with!
I have a couple of questions, though - there are 4 black "hat" knobs on it, but the pics I´ve seen of similar guitars have white "flower"like knobs. What is original? I would like my guitar to look as original as possible. Also, there is no pickguard, and I really would like to get one with the logo, not the replacement ones that people sell on Ebay. Can anyone help?
This one might be to much to ask for: One previous owner scraped the paint off the head (maybe he was ashamed that it was a cheap guitar? Ignorant!) So I painted it black and put my own name, Yngve, in silver "cadillac"-like letters on it - looks kinda cool. But I´d rather have an original neck with the original logo and everything - if anyone know of one... - it´s exactly the same guitar as Ray Barron´s photos on the Instrument Master List. http://www.broadwaymusicco.com/Harmony24.htm
Also I will recommend the young gifted norwegian artist, Sondre Lerche. He has toured US and on the cover of his first album has a Harmony Rocket. This is the Europe/Japan cover only.. http://www.sondrelerche.com/discography_show.asp?show=faceseur
Sondre is a great guy and loves to play guitar - he has posted lyrics and chords to his songs on the net.

I regularly play a '48 Harmony Monterey on stage for finger picking and gut bucket acoustic blues. Every one who has heard the guitar and played it has been quite impressed. One of the guitarists in my band said he likes the guitar better than a Gibson L5 that he used to have. I play mainly 40's and 50's American Roots Music (i.e. rockabilly, rock and roll, jump blues, western swing, hillbilly etc..)

Normally I play Teles.

Recently I wandered into a local pawn shop, and bought a strange anonymous guitar. It had no identifying marks on it whatsoever. The dealer told me he thought it was a National. After a little digging, I discovered that I had a 1962 2 pickup Stratotone!

I'm completely obsessed with this guitar!! It looks fantastic, plays like a dream, and sounds like a million bucks. (Although, realistically, it should be more around $175)

I just wish that there wasn't so much ground noise....I'm thinking about shielding it....anyone have any luck with shielding a Stratotone?

Anyway, I love it, and I'm officially a Harmony man.

Hey!
I've got a Harmony that I use for my blues rock solo project quite abit. It used to belong to my dad back when he played and it sat for alot of years until I started playing about 6 years ago or so. It doesn't see much stage use because I am usually playing fairly heavey stuff (I have a Gibson SG and a Godin Solidac two voice for up there) but when I want to record something more classic rock or bluesy rock that's where I look. As far as I can tell it's a 1964 H66 Vibro-jet except the Tremolo doesn't work. Anybody know how I could fix it?

I play a 1976 Harmony V. I saw the body in the garbage driving by. It had 1 of the points broken off, and was cracked in half. Luckily for this guitar, I am a cabinetmaker. It looks as good as new now with a Granite paintjob. I had to put everything in it, not even posts in the damn thing when I found it. I swiped a neck from an old J.C. Penny Harmony someone was throwing out a week later. Strange huh? I found both parts within 2 blocks and 2 weeks of each other. Very odd and lucky situations.

I have a Sovereign I purchsed new in about 1965.I played it at just about every folk and blues club in London and other places .I used to sing folk and play bluegrass and blues .its a great guitar but sadly at a party some drunk kicked the side in .As I was sober I picked every tiny piece of mahogany up when the party was over .I then put the body under tension by clamping top and bottom to the proper hight and then stuck every bit back together.Amazingly it played just as great as before .I stopped playing it in 1982 ,its last gig was a local show in the village where I now live . I mainly stopped using it because the fret board looked like a farmers track.ruts and furrows, completely worn out .I also bought a Fender Strat which had a much better neck for blues playing and moved on to Electric blues ,I always found the Sov had a thick neck for my small hands ..
Amazingly on Ebay I found a source of original Harmony 60's fret boards for the Sovereign .Cannot believe it .I will now ressurect it at last .I now need some new tuners for it .I keep seeing a lot of fake late sovs on ebay .A 60's neck just sold for 70 english pounds .A pity I would have liked to have bought it for the tuners and then sold the rest .Interesting site ,thanks .
keep up the good work

Hi,
Back in the sixties, I played a Harmony 22 (?) Bass, with one p/up, it was one of my favorite basses until it got stolen and now... almost 40 years later, still active as a professional bass player I'd love to find another one of these beautiful instruments with a very earthy sound. Anyone knows where I could possibly find one? Any information welcome. Thanks in advance.

Great site! Really enjoyed reading about all the amazing old Harmony guitars. I am a professional player and, admittedly, I generally use Fenders in a live situation ... but some years back I ended up trading an amp I didn't like for a Harmony Rebel. I suppose technically I got screwed as the Rebels don't seem to have a lot of actual monetary value on E-Bay or as re-sell items, but I really don't care. This rebel is just one funky, soulful, beautiful, nostalgic instrument that I am so glad I acquired.
I was trying to figure out the year on it through your site and I couldn't quite ascertain when mine was made. The guy I got it from said it was a '69, but people tell you just about anything sometimes. Bought a "sixties model" Fender Musicmaster bass in a thrift store for $225 and it turned out to be a '73. Still a great deal in my estimation!
Anyway .... through the single f-hole on my traditional sunburst rebel (i do love those avacado models ... sigh) I can see the serial number 4447H82. Can anyone post and tell me what year it was made or any other info? Thanks! My best to all Harmony enthusiasts.

I just got paid $25 for playing my 50s Harmony Patrician. I love my Patrician and depend on it for certain venues. The action is sublime and I can play jazz, rock, country, folk, bluegrass on it.

I have a DeArmond pickup from the 50s that I use on it. Last year I choked back a tear and had a strap peg mounted. I may consider having a pickup mounted inside.

I also have a Stella Tenor circa 1960.

Hi guys, not sure if anyone still reads this page (last post is dated 2004, and it's almost 2007!) but here goes:

I'm a pro performing & recording artist in Atlanta, GA USA. My very first guitar was my dad's beat-up Harmony Master archtop, which I eventually fixed up. I still have it and use it to this day, though not on stage. However, I recently purchased a Harmony Flying V and found it sounds great on Blues songs. Since one of the groups I play in is a Blues band, I predict it will get a lot of stage time. It's now been 15 years since I first picked up my dad's Old Harmony Co. guitar and I think it's only appropriate that I own a New Harmony axe (the 1980s "V"). I was very pleased to find this online community of Harmony collectors, the web pages have answered tons of questions I've had for the past decade! Thanks ~ Nick Edelstein

Hi, I own several onld harmonys, as well as a couple of newer "Established" and one of the new models from the last time they were re-issued. The oldest is a 1958 stratotone, that my father-in-law had in a closet for years and gave to me, I have a 1960 archtone, a 1967 monterey, a strat copy, a les paul copy, a martin copy, and a re-issue sovereign. I play them all in various bands in the clubs around dayton, and in a duo with my wife in some of the local coffee houses. I love them, and am constantly searching eBay for another one. I'm addicted! Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine!!

Hey I own 2 Harmony. I inherited the first one 10 years ago from my mom's uncle. It's been in the family since it was bought new my grand-grandfather hehe it's a flat top with nylon strings sounds just like ''Polly'' from Nirvana.

The other one is a modified '64 H15. It has a strat pickup in the middle, between the original Golden Tones, an industrial 3 way toggle switch, a low-cut circuit copied from the ones found in Fender Jags and 6 tuning machines borrowed from a Yamaha. It's the best backup guitar for my old Jag, I'm really happy with the sound and feel, love the thick neck! Harmony rocks!

Hi there!

Michael from New Jersey here, and I'm a BIG "Chicago" instrument enthusiest.

When I was first starting to get into vintage gear, I went through a wide array of Harmony guitars... had a Bobcat, a Stratotone... I (ever so sadly) passed up the chance to nab a well-played Stratotone Newport for two bills a few years back... all of which I've since cycled through... haha...

A few years back I nabbed a well-played early-model Hollywood... it was a project axe that was missing, well, everything... I found me a '63 Rowe/DeArmond "Mustache" pickup to slap on there, some NOS pots and Klusons from my "junk drawer"... and now its part of my regular live rig!

I also gig out regularly with a minty pair of 'cadillacs'... an H-75 and an H-77. Yeah, I've got to have them set up frequently, and I find myself doing neck adjustments more than I'd like to admit... but damn, if these aren't my number ones!

Hi folks.

I've been playing Harmony mandolins almost exclusively for around 23 years. The first one I bought from a mate is still the one I use onstage every gig. An F hole model, it has binding front an' back, sounds beautiful (and loud) compared to instruments in the same price bracket these days which have so much finish on them that they'll never mature into anything. I also picked up a cheaper looking model where the F holes are made up of seperate cuttings and binding only on the top. The sound is good but it needs some TLC a it' looks like it's been in the back of a cupboard for years. The third one I own is of Asian extraction and much deeper bodied than the first two. Again, the sound is beautiful an' I look forward to fitting it with a little transducer to use live. I have a couple of other mandos that I use occasionally. One is a resonator mandolin an' looks superb but isn't very versatile an' the other is one that I stap to the back of my bike when I'm off motorcycle tourin' around Europe. Neither are a patch on my Harmonys.
I don't pick, just strum, an' use the mando as an accompanyment when singin' my songs. Have a listen at

www.myspace.com/stevieoneblokeonemandolin

Seasons Greetings to you all

Stevie.

How's it going? I have super-rare Harmony and I can't find any info on it. The axe is a double cutaway, neck-through with dual humbuckers. A close friend gave it to me as a gift. He was generous enough to give me the Bill Lawrence pickups that someone along the line had swapped into it. The only label is a sticker on the back of the headstock that says E777. It reminds me of a late 70's Ibanez. I'm in the process of getting it all back together and would love some info on this super guitar.

I am extremely impressed with your writing skills as

it is rare to see a great blog like this one these days.
