Welcome to the HarmonyUSA blog!

Hello to all who have visited my website!

As most of you know, I am a professional entertainer. I travel extensively and am away from home about 250 days per year, so I do not have near enough time to keep the Harmony site updated like I want.

But, I want the site to be more interactive, so I am creating this blog.

I will write things as often as I can and you can use the comment feature to have your say.

Please keep it clean! I will delete any obscene posts and if it is abused, I will discontinue it entirely.

Now for the first subject......and tooting my horn a bit....

The song "Mississippi Mud Dog" from my "Pickin' On Harmony" album is included on the sound track for an upcoming program on the BBC!

We signed a contract with them and they will use the song on the program "Natural World" and the episode is called "Mississippi".

It will air in the U.K. November 25 and will be seen on BBC America and on The Discovery Channel later this year or early next year.
So we got an ALL VINTAGE HARMONY song in the film industry!

Keep the faith and keep on pickin'

Hi Jim, I have recently seen a Harmony Amplifier in a thrift store. Model #L-200 Serial #9867. It is a very small and thin amp. with maybe a 4 or 5 inch speaker. It seems to be in mint condition. Can you tell me what year it was made? Or tell me how to find out? I've check it out on the web but all I find are "H" models. Thanks,
Chris

My first electric guitar was a red Harmony Rocket 2 pickup model. I was 15 years old and in a "garage band" - we played all the 60's hits including "louie louie" and the old stones. Now, about 35 years later I am now revisiting my youth and have 2 great old Harmonys - one is a 1962 H59 with 3 pickups, the other is a 1963 H74 which I have restored. who says you cant go home again?

I have a Harmony guitar that belonged to my father. It is a black flat top acoustic with a green palm tree and moon scene on it and a silver fretboard. There is a stamped mark inside it which I think says F35. It is set up as a lap steel, with a nut extender and heavy gauge flatwound strings. Can anyone tell me any more about his instrument?

Hi all. I found my grandfathers old Patrician acoustic at my moms house. The fretboard came off but I have pics. The odd thing is on the headstock, it doesn't say Harmony, it says
Patrician
The Harmony Company, Chicago

I couldn't find any serial numbers or pics anywhere that look similiar to it.

Here's the link to my pics of the guitar.

I have my father's Harmony guitar. The original wooden tailpiece broke so I used a modern Gibson tailpiece so I could play it. It is a dark sunburst (tobacco?) f-hole six string guitar. It is a Monterey (printed in white on the headstock) but I can not find ANY stamps or serial number inside of it. It is kind of tough to see inside. The guitar also has the white checkerboard tape around the edges.
1 - Any one have guidance on finding the serial number or have more information for identifying the guitar?
2 - Any one know where I might find the original wooden tailpiece?

Thank you

I have a Harmony Steel String Acoustic Guitar. All the tuning pegs are on one side of the head. Serial #2388H168. The date looks unclear but I can see 5-69 0r 9-69. Also I think I can see USA under the single digit number. I bought it 01/1970.

The instrument is in good condition. I am not fishing for a sale as I intend to keep the guitar. I thought since you do not have a photo of a Harmony of this type on your web site you may like to have a photo or two.

Hi all!

Just bought a 1973 Harmony acoustic dreadnought guitar at a garage sale for a whopping $2 (with original case). Model #6690 according to the soundhole sticker and it's in beautiful condition!! Does anyone have a guitar built in the same year as me? I would like to compare pics and am curious to know how you like them. I'm a faithful Fender & Gretsch guitar player. This is my first Harmony guitar and I know nothing about it.

Hi, back in the early 70s I was a young semipro guitarist in a blues/rock/pop trio in the West Midlands of the UK, and I did a stack of gigs with a blonde H75 3-pickup semiacoustic double-cutaway. I was running it through a Vox AC30. It had a tendency to feed-back, and not just the strings : the body would resonate even if the strings were muted. I got round this by stuffing the body cavity with cotton-wool. (This mainly happened when I stamped on my Dallas-Arbiter "Fuzz-Face", but Hendrix & Clapton were all the rage at the time, so a rich distorted sound was de rigeur.) I liked the sound of the pickups, and found the wide, flattish fretboard really rather playable. I traded it in for a good Les Paul copy, but always had a sneaking affection for the old harmony. Not as good as a 335, but still a good guitar with lots of character, and a real pedigree. Would I buy another now if I had the chance ? I'm playing strats & teles, and a 335, but I think that I would. There was a 'gretch-y' sound as I recall, and I'd love to get my hands on one to see how good it actually is. My memory of it is very positive.

I had been looking at Harmony guitars especially Rockets for about 2 years on ebay. I found one at a local music store, a 1970 double cutaway 2 pickup in mint condition. What a wonderful guitar; I play it clean with just a hint of reverb thru my 65 Princeton or my 66 Bandmaster and it sounds just like 60's heaven. Also believe it or not I find it sounds great for jazz a la Joe Pass style. I play this guitar all the time now.

Hi, was just glancing through your site and thought this might be a good place to start and ask I question that I have.
Would anyone have information about a Sovereign Guitar Model S5423. Made in China. I cannot seem to find any information about it. I'm assuming it wasn't made in the USA so it's most likely not an authentic Harmony guitar, however someone that happened to walk by me the day I was carrying it to have it repaired said "Oh wow! that's a 1960's guitar" I found this guitar in the garbage with the bridge and strings missing. You may be asking yourself why would I spend the money on having it repaired, well you see when I went to throw throw the garbage out I noticed this thing and a feeling came over me to take it, like it had a mind of it's own and wanted to belong to someone. No I'm not crazy...LOL. Just very intuitive. And I don't talk to it if you must know...LOL. So if anyone has any info, it would be greatly appreciated.

Is this site still active? One of my Harmonys --H74 --
has bridge that is adjustable for height, but also each string can be adjusted for intonation and lateral for spacing. It has the typical archtop rosewood base, but the upper prtion is chrome. It is NOT a roller bridge. The only time that I've seen another bridge like it was on e-bay. Anyone know about these bridges? Who made them? I'd like a couple more.

I have a solid state Harmony amp I would like to sell. From what I can tell it looks like from the early 70's. This amp is all orginal and in pristine condition and perfect in every way.Inside and out. Model #7094-90 with 25 watts of power. Orginal paper tags in place with serial number. Works and sounds great. This would make a wonderful addition to a vintage Harmony instrument. If interested call 504-468-9273 or 504-339-9273.I might be able to email pictures. I am NOT a dealer or ebayer.

Hi Jim,
My name is Greg, from 'down under'
I've been playing a Harmony for many years and, although I have always loved playing it, only now appreciate what a gem it is. It doesn't have a model name on it as such. The number inside is 4075H66. It has a battery operated tremelo fitted which was there when I bought it from a friend some 30 years ago. It looks like it was factory fitted. Is this possible as I don't notice any other Harmony's with this feature? I put some foreign tuning heads on it some years ago, it's in pretty good condition with original scratch plate although the plate has a couple of cracks and chips. Would this rate as a collectors piece and could you name the model?
Thanks.

I have an old Harmony Soveregien guitar which I bought back in about 1966-1967. It is black, with a black background pick guard wjhich has a white swirl design on it. This is the first time I have even looked at it in over 25 years. Well, on opening the case I gound the white plastic stng guide had pulled away from the beck, the plate on the upper neck with the name in it is pulling away from the top area of the neck, and afew other flaws. However, the body seems to be in pretty good shape, as well as the neck itself.
Is this worth repairing? If not, is there anyone interested in it for parts. I'm probably being a dang fool being so honest, but I know very little about guitar repairs or worth. If anyone can help, please email me at: bpisani@tampabay.rr.com Thanks..Ben

I bought a Harmony Nylon (Classic) in 1963 and learned the guitar on it. It is a model 173 and has the date S-63. I still have it and it looks as though is will outlast me -- I'm 70 years old. The guitar is just great and I don't think I'll ever get rid of it.

My son recently obtained a Harmony guitar that is a very close copy in appearance to a Les Paul & he is trying to find out something about it. Any help would be welcomed, such as when/when made, USA or Asian, etc.

It is cherry finish with 2 volume & 2 tone controls, solid body. 22 frets. No identifying dates etc, just H-90 on the rear.

Thanks to this site I have identified the model of an aged and in need of repair Harmony H25 Electric Bass guitar.

I would like to btain a replacement nut bone for this guitar, as the original has gone the way of all things.

I would laso like to know if the replacement strings are different from those normally purchased in US stores. The ones I received have eyelets secured to one end and I cannot determine how to secure them onto the bridge pieces!

Can anyone help? Please?

Guitar Repairs

Does the Guitar have the original neck & fretboard available ?

Two ways to approach:

You can establish an 'Alert' on eBay telling you when any 'Harmony' guitar parts - under guitar parts - shows up & wait for a 'parts guitar' or neck etc.

If you have the Original Neck & it is in bad shape - Mike can judge the repair necessary - or - secure you another 'modern' neck with truss rod & fit it to your Guitar.

I believe he can replicate the headstock lettering as well - which is usually painted on.

Cheers !

I love the feel sound and that ohhh so vintage smell of old guitars!!!

I live in Toledo and help Host an annual Guitar Festival for players and students and am adding more events each year.It would be cool to add a bit of a vintage show to the event.

Finally, what gives with the re-issues??? I'd love to see one...where are they??

It made me wonder about Harmony's big guitar on this websites' home page. As I understand it was, techally functional, but not practical and done as a advertising stunt. I wonder what happend to it. Is it still in existance?

Jim:

You have done a GREAT job on the Harmony web site. I am a retired professional player who got his start on an H22 Harmony Bass way back in 1962. I paid $75.00 for it brand new. I still have the recipts where I made weekly payments. The bass made several TV appearances in the 60's. I used a Fender Bassman Amp until I purchased a pop top Ampeg B 15. The Ampeg sounded much better and was easy to carry in my Volkswagen Bug. I still have the Bass and will pass it on to my children when I depart this world.

I have a Harmony Sovereign acoustic, box guitar. It is black with ivory trim. It has seven mother of pearl markers on the neck. Inside of the sound hole, it is stamped 616H1264. There are black with ivory trim pick guards on each side of the sound hole. On looking at the Sovereigns listed on your site, I was unable to find this particular guitar. I received this from my father from sometime between 1966 - 1968. I would appreciate it if you would contact me on what you know about this guitar. I could send you pictures if you need them. Does the tone dampen on anyone's guitar when turning the volume down? I just bought a 1967 H-78 and the volume knobs are functioning as tone controls.

I have an old Harmony guitar I can't ID and know nothing about it. Is anyone knowledgable about vintage models? It's acoustic and slightly larger than a baratone uke, but 6 strings. Cute little thing. Says Harmony on the top/front of the headstock and a huge treble clef and Made in USA between the tuning pegs. No other ID. It has NO pickguard, position dots at 5, 7, 9, 12 frets, translucent mother-of-pearl binding on the top and the strings attach to the body w/6 pins (not a tailpiece that attaches to the heel).

L: 32", W: 11", D: 3.5". 19th fret to the nut is 14.5" and total neck length is 21.5". Can anyone direct me to more info? thanx in advance.

Hi Jim,
My name is Gregg Bowers from Inwood WV. I have two Harmony Guitars and I just play for fun. I have a 1961 Harmony Stratotone and a 1972 Harmony Rocket. I've been trying to find the value of the instruments with no luck. everyone seems to want money to tell me what they are worth. Any ways I stumbled stumbled across your web page and thought it was really neat. If anyone reading this has any Response please e-mail me, greggbowers@yahoo.com. Thanks and keep up the good work on your blog.

Jim, my name is Mel. Have a Harmony Rocket model H53/1. According to the date on the back of the pick-up coil, it was made in '67. I want to restore this guitar(don't think many of these made), but don't know where to find replacement parts. Need the electronic components. (pick-up coil, control knobs)Any info would be appreciated

I just picked up an old Harmony guitar. It is all mahogany accoustic and smaller than an average guiter. It has an original sticker that says that is was made by the Harmony Company in Chicago. I can tell it has some age to it. There was a string package that was dated 1962 so it's at least that old. I am trying to find it's value does anyone know what it's worth? All I can find are the new lines. If anyone knows anything about it please email me at jason.matlack@yahoo.com

Glad I stumbled on your page again after all these years! Is your page with Harmony guitar catalog pages, Studebaker stage truck still extant or did it go dark?

I loved that page.

Just found this board and will post here even though there doesn't seem to have been much activity recently.
I'm not a musician by any stretch; just a working stiff who takes guitar lessons and occasionally jams with a buddy. I am fascinated by the Harmony brand and its history. Those instruments are a throwback to a time when affordable budget priced products could be manufactured domestically.
And Jim, I have your CD Pickin' On Harmony which I have enjoyed very much.
I own an H35 "Batwing" Harmony electric mandolin with the original case which I found on Reverb. The Batwing was offered in acoustic and electric versions late in Harmony's run. (Late 1960's to early 1970's) Blues musician James (Yank) Rachell used the electric version. John Paul Jones owned the acoustic version which was used on some Led Zeppelin recordings and concerts.
Steve
